Introduction Infancy and early childhood is a crucial time for development. This stage of life occurs between birth and about the age of 3. This life stage really lays the groundwork for the path an individual will take in life. Hiccups in the path now, may lead to more hiccups in the future. Many developmental milestones occur during this early stage of life. A few of the key milestones are language acquisition, emotional development, motor development and gender identity development. Three men by the names of Jean Piaget, Erik Erikson, and John Bowlby have theorized what happens in this stage of life. Theorists Piaget came up with the Theory of cognitive development. The theory of cognitive development has four stages. Sensorimotor is the first stage. The first stage of Piaget s theory lasts from birth to approximately about the age of two. This stage is centered on the infant trying to make sense of the world around them through hearing, seeing, smelling, touching, tasting, and feeling. Erik Erikson developed the theory of Psychosocial Development. The first stage is this theory is titled trust vs. mistrust which occurs from birth to about 18 months of age. Erikson’s theory is centered on the infant s basic needs being met by primarily a mother figure. When infant’s basic needs are being met consistently they learn to develop a sense of trust. When infant’s basic needs are not being met predictably and consistently the infant begins to develop mistrust. Nature Is at the Heart of ‘the Darkling Thrush’ and Most of Hardys Most Famous Poems. Essay Nature is at the heart of ‘The Darkling Thrush’ and most of Hardy’s most famous poems. Hardy is a renowned rural poet which suggests that he has a keen interest and knowledge of nature. However, this is not to say that nature is at the heart at every one of his most famous poems – it is sometimes merely a backdrop for other themes, such as war, fate and lost love. Hardy explores human nature in ‘Drummer Hodge’, the downward spiral of mankind using ‘Channel Firing’ and romantic grief in ‘The Voice’. In my opinion this statement implies that all of Hardy’s most famous works are connected to nature. However, such a prolific poet cannot be labelled with such an absolute statement. Although on the surface ‘Darkling Thrush’ appears to focus on the theme of nature, it actually addresses a myriad of themes including mankind being victims of time and Hardy’s apprehension about the uncertainty of the new century. The internal punctuation causes the poem to have an inbuilt awkwardness, ‘an aged thrush, frail, gaunt, and small’, which encapsulates Hardy’s fear of the unknown future and leaving behind the familiarity and heritage of the past in the headlong rush to progress. For a similar purpose Hardy uses an alternate rhyme scheme with a slightly disjointed rhythm; ‘among’ and ‘evensong’, to recreate a sense of uncertainty also found in the work of H. G Wells and Bram Stoker. Hardy uses alliteration in ‘Century’s corpse’ as a symbol of the winter landscape and the end of the century. The landscape is in mourning; ‘the wind his death-lament’, ‘the ancient pulse of germ and birth was shrunken hard and dry’ and ‘his crypt the cloudy canopy’. In the depth of winter, rebirth seems impossible, but Hardy contrasts this with the optimism of the thrush; this symbolises the hope Hardy feels he has lost. Perhaps the ‘aged’ thrush is a representation of himself, although some readers may interpret the use of the bird as nature representing hope in a desolate landscape, others view the text as pessimistic. Therefore Hardy’s use of nature is ambiguous and depends on the reader’s interpretation. In contrast, Hardy’s use of nature in ‘The Convergence of the Twain’ is less mbiguous. Hardy feels that the ‘intimate welding’ of nature and fate has resulted in the ‘jar’ of ‘two hemispheres’; it is ‘human vanity’ or human nature that is at the heart of this text. Hardy highlights the arrogance of society and their pursuit of wealth; qualities that he felt characterised the 19th Century. The poet juxtaposes the opulence of the ‘mirrorsâ €™ and ‘jewels’ with the ‘grotesque’ creatures of the sea; here nature is indifferent to the suffering of mankind. Hardy disapproved of this ‘floating palace’ and like many contemporaries was concerned by the view that it was ‘unsinkable’. The rhythm of the poem echoes the waves and the ship’s inevitable journey towards the iceberg, its ‘sinister mate’. Mankind has no control as fate intertwines with nature, a thought echoed by the punctuation at the end of the poem, ‘said ‘Now! ’ and each one hears’. The classical form shown by the Roman numerals reveals the timelessness of nature’s influence. Although this is a prominent theme of the poem, fate is Hardy’s main concern. The classical form is also found in ‘Drummer Hodge’ to emphasise the timelessness of war, an issue that has plagued society for centuries. It also highlights the eternal ‘dusty loam’ where Hodge is ‘laid to rest’, showing that although nature contributes to the poem, Hardy’s compassion for Hodge and men like him is a more prominent theme at the heart of this poem. This is not to say Hardy was not a rural poet; in some of his works, such as ‘Weathers’, he focuses entirely on the world he sees around him. Chestnut spikes’, ‘nestlings fly’ and ‘meadow rivulets overflow’ reveal Hardy’s skill at providing snapshots of the natural world. Nevertheless, in most of Hardy’s most famous poems there are significant underlying themes which are apparent in the texts above. There is no one stereotype under which Hardy can be classified; the reader must bea r this in mind when analysing his poetry, and look more deeply into his works rather than only exploring the surface themes.

King Lear: Comedy or Tragedy? There has been many different views on the plays of William Shakespeare and definitions of what kind of play they were. The two most popular would be the comedy and the tragedy. King Lear to some people may be a comedy because they believe that the play has been over exaggerated. Others would say King Lear was a tragedy because there is so much suffering and chaos. What makes a Shakespearean play a comedy or a tragedy? King Lear would be a tragedy because it meets all the requirements of a tragedy as defined by Andrew Cecil Bradley. Bradley states that a Shakespearean tragedy must have to be the story of the hero and that there is exceptional suffering and calamity slowly being worn in as well as it being contrasted to happier times. The play also depicts the troubled parts in his life and eventually his death that is instantaneous caused by the suffering and calamity. There is the feeling of fear in the play as well, that makes men see how blind they are not knowing when fortune or something else would be on them. The hero must be of a high status on the chain and the hero also possesses a tragic flaw that initiates the tragedy. The fall of the hero is not felt by him alone but creates a chain reaction which affects everything below him. There must also be the element of chance or accident that influences some point in the play. King Lear meets all of these requirements that has been laid out by Bradley which is the most logical for a definition of a tragedy as compared to the definition of a comedy by G. Wilson Knight. The main character of the play would be King Lear who in terms of Bradley would be the hero and hold the highest position is the social chain. Lear out of Pride and anger has banished Cordelia and split the kingdom in half to the two older sisters, Goneril and Regan. This is Lear's tragic flaw which prevents him to see the true faces of people because his pride and anger overrides his judgement. As we see in the first act, Lear does not listen to Kent's plea to see closer to the true faces of his daughters. Kent has hurt Lear's pride by disobeying his order to stay out of his and Cordelia's way when Lear has already warned him, "The bow is bent and drawn, make from the shaft." Kent still disobeys Lear and is banished. Because of this flaw, Lear has initiated the tragedy by disturbing the order in the chain of being by dividing the kingdom, banishing his best servant and daughter, and giving up his thrown. Due to this flaw, Lear has given way to the two older daughters to conspire against him. Lear is finally thrown out of his daughters home and left with a fool, a servant and a beggar. This is when Lear realizes the mistake that he has made and suffers the banishment of his two eldest daughters. Lear is caught in a storm and begins to lose his sanity because he can not bear the treatment of his two daughters as well as the error he has made with Cordelia and Kent. Lear also suffers from rest when he is moving all over the place and the thing that breaks him is the death of his youngest daughter Cordelia. This suffering can be contrasted with other happier times like when Lear was still king and when he was not banished by his two daughters. The feeling of fear is when Lear is in the storm raging against the gods, "I tax not you, you elements, with unkindness. I never gave you kingdom, called you children, you owe me no subscription.", telling them to rage harder since he has not done anything for them and that he didn't deserve what he has received from his two daughters. The fear is how Lear in a short period of time went from king to just a regular peasant and from strong and prideful to weak and unconfident. This shows that men do not hold their own destiny and that even though things may be great now you can be struck down just as fast as was to Lear. The fall of Lear is not just the suffering of one man but the suffering of everyone down the chain. Those born with the entrepreneurial spirit have a few things in common that might place them at a higher-than-average risk of burnout. While research on this condition is plentiful in large corporations, data specific to small business and entrepreneurship isn’t. One study surveyed over 300 members of the entrepreneur networking organization, Business Networking International, to get a better understanding of what makes entrepreneurs burn out. The study looked at everything from job fit to beliefs about work. The majority of those in the survey reported feeling like they fit in their chosen profession and possessed a high level of harmonious passion. However, 25 percent of entrepreneurs felt moderately burned out, and three percent felt strongly that they had a case of burnout.It’s interesting to point out that the higher levels of passion the participants reported equated to a higher level of burnout. A smaller portion of study participants said they felt obsessive passion and destiny beliefs about their current professional roles. These individuals also self-reported more severe burnout symptoms.Strategies to combat burnoutThe good news is that once you recognize your risk of burnou t, you can create a few intentional practices that will decrease your chances of feeling the burn. Here are a few strategies that can protect your small business from burnout:Develop a flexible mindsetPassionate people tend to migrate towards fixed mindsets about their job fit, which can quickly lead to job stress. Adopting a flexible mindset just means that you can envision more than one perfect career for your life. This allows you to view your job as one part of who you are, not the only thing that makes you a unique individual. This isn’t a natural mindset to break. If you suffer from a fixed mindset, the first thing you need to do is to recognize areas of closed-mindedness. Once you see one of these areas, challenge your thinking to be more flexible. Another strategy is to acknowledge your efforts more than your traits. For instance, instead of identifying how smart you are, consider how hard you work instead. This can also help you notice other people’s efforts a t work, too.Switch up your workHave you ever noticed that doing the same thing for a few hours (much less a whole day) can zap your energy? Creative people who are tasked to write compelling copy or create the next masterpiece day after day can feel exhausted when they do the same task for too long. Gattaca Viewing Essay Themes in texts are what make them interesting and engaging. A text which has a number of intriguing themes is the feature film Gattaca, written and directed by Andrew Niccol, and released in 1997. One particular theme which is evident in Gattaca is the idea that the most important key to a person’s success is not their genetic material but their ambitions, drive and determination. This theme is explored in the film through the conventions of performance and characterisation, camera angles, camera shots and by music/sound.Early in the film Gattaca, Vincent undergoes a transformation. Prior to the transformation Vincent is seen as an unconfident person with bad body language, baggy clothing and glasses which all indicates that Vincent is inferior. Vincent wants to be able to work at Gattaca but he knows that he can’t make it in because of his genetic material (heart problem), so he meets German (broker) who helps Vincent undergo the transformation. When German asks Vincent how committed he is to the project; Vincent says â€Å"I’d give 100%,† to which German replies, â€Å"That’ll get you halfway there†.This shows you how much effort Vincent has to put in to get into Gattaca, but with drive and determination on Vincent’s side he not only gets into Gattaca but one of their elites. After Vincent’s transformation from a â€Å"borrowed ladder† to a valid his attitude and looks had changed completely. His posture and body language had become almost perfect and his attitude to life had also transformed completely; making him look like a professional. You can finally see the complete transformation when Vincent has his interview at Gattaca, when he looks into the mirror.You can see that Vincent is impressed with what he has transformed into. During the film Gattaca, the mission director at Gattaca was brutally murdered, in which Investigators took control of Gattaca and checked everyth ing, everywhere and everyone, gene to gene. When Vincent sees all of these people searching for clues and evidence he slightly loses faith and starts to rethink his whole dream. The investigators find a suspect, but no details are given except a picture (of Vincent) and the fact that the suspect is an invalid.There are many different scenes in which Vincent almost gets caught, but one of the tensest scenes was when Vincent went on the treadmill for his training. Prior to this scene we see Jerome clip a heart rate monitor onto himself and we see him ride his wheel chair so they can record his heartbeat, which we figure out that Vincent is going to end up using it. When Vincent goes onto the treadmill we see him quickly switch heart rate monitors and then we see him jogging. Then we see two investigator walk into the gym facility where everyone is getting there heart rate checked, including Vincent.While the investigators are talking to the doctors we, the viewers can hear Vincentâ₠¬â„¢s heart beat (non-diegetic), which slowly builds up the tension. Then when the investigators and the doctor are talking about Vincent, his Heart beat monitors recording finished early so we can hear his real heartbeat which is going really fast so he quickly unclipped his heart rate monitor and walked off. This shows you the risks and challenges that Vincent faces every day and the ways he deals with them.At the beginning of Gattaca Vincent and his brother Anton play a dangerous game called â€Å"Chicken†. Chicken involves Vincent and Anton battling against each other and against the great force of nature as they swim out into the ocean as far as they possibly can until one gives in or turns back. Both Anton and Vincent are presented through high angles to show their inferiority and insignificance compared to rough and wavy ocean. There are also scenes in which they are displayed through eye level shots to show that the conditions are equal to both of them.Later on in the film Vincent and Anton go back out into the ocean and have another game of Chicken in which Vincent, against all odds beats Anton. This is a significant part of the film because Vincent finally realises that he can achieve anything and he can finally travel into space. â€Å"It was the one moment in our lives that my brother was not as strong as he believed, and I was not as weak. It was the moment that made everything possible†. Camera angles help support the theme that the most important key to a person’s success is not their genetic material but their ambitions, drive and determination.At the end of Gattaca, Vincent was only moments away from achieving his goal to go to Gattaca. At the same time Jerome is preparing to end his life. These two scenes are intercut so we can see Vincent finally getting onto the rocket and achieving his goal while Jerome is stepping into the incinerator preparing to kill himself because he lived a miserable life, having perfect genetic material but a lack of determination and drive. This scene is extremely tense because we feel emotionally overwhelmed; happy for Vincent and sympathetic for Jerome.We also feel quite emotional because we know Jerome is going to die happy and we know that he was happy to be part of Vincent’s transformation: â€Å"I got the better end of the deal. I only lent you my body †¦ you lent me your dream†. This is the final scene of the film that completes the theme. Vincent made his dream come true, not because of his genetic material but because of his ambitions, drive and determination. It is evident in the feature film Gattaca, by Andrew Niccol that the key to a person’s success is not their genetic material but their ambitions, drive and determination.Gattaca is full of interesting ideas and themes which are explored throughout Vincent’s journey. HOW WOULD YOU CHARACTERIZE THE ENERGY BEVERAGE CATEGORY, COMPETITORS, CHANNELS, AND DPSG’S CATEGORY PARTICIPATION IN LATE 2007?_ In late 2007 the energy beverage category was reaching market maturity and projected to have a slower annual growth rate from 2007 to 2011 (10.5%) than it had between 2001 and 2006 (42.5%). Rising prices, packaging competition, and the introduction of hybrid energy beverages also added to the slower projected growth rate. However in 2007 the market still saw growth of 32%. The category is dominated by 5 major brands (94% of dollar sales), with Red Bull far above the pack with a 43% dollar sales market share. The other 4 are in close competitions with dollar sales market shares from 10-16%. Though Red Bull continues to grow, so does the competition. New, aggressive competition into the market and brands offering lower prices has brought Red Bull’s market share down from 82% in 2000 to 43% in 2007. This 43% of dollar sales is maintained with only a 30% share of unit case volume. Because of loyalty to Red Bull, consumers pay a premium price for its products. Red Bull’s 8.5 oz. cans sell for the same price (approx. $2.00) as many competitors’ 16 oz. cans and their 16 oz. can sells for around $3.50. This loyalty puts Red Bull far above other brands and leaves them to compete with each other on price and packaging. Pepsi and Rockstar are not projected to have any significant media expenditures in 2007, but Red Bull and Hansen Natural Corporation are projected to increase their media expenditures to $60.9 Million (from $39.6M) and $153,800 (from $61,100) respectively. Once again, it is clear to see the major difference between Red Bull and the rest of the group. Coca-Cola (Full-Throttle, Tab) is projected to decrease its media expenditure from $7.3 million to $492K, which is still more than Hansen, but far from the expenditure that Red Bull maintains. Off-premise retailers represent 71% of total retail dollar sales compared to 29% for on-premise retailers. Off-premise retail sales are dominated by convenience stores (74%), but the off-premise retailers are slowly evolving. Convenience stores are slowly decreasing in percentage of sales, while sales  in supermarkets and Wal-Mart are growing. Brands with broad product lines, multi-packs, and widespread distribution networks are succeeding in supermarkets and stores like Wal-Mart. In convenience stores, brands with smaller product lines and high inventory turnover, are gaining success. Restaurants, night clubs, and other on-premise retailers remain constant and are not projected to have any significant changes. In 2007 DPSG began setting up distribution channels, which were projected to reach 80% of its target market by early 2008. It also began distributing Monster energy drinks on behalf of Hansen. DPSG also participated in the U.S. Sports Drink market in late 2007 with its launch of Accelerade RTD. It supported the launch with a large marketing budget which consisted of a web site, podcasts, search-engine marketing, and a chat room. It emphasized the protein content to differentiate itself from the competition. _2. DOES YOUR CHARACTERIZATION BODE WELL FOR A NEW ENERGY BEVERAGE BRAND INTRODUCTION GENERALLY AND FOR DPSG, INC. IN PARTICULAR?_ Generally it does not bode well for the introduction of a new energy beverage brand but in Dr. Pepper Snapple Group’s case, they may have the brand loyalty, budget, and awareness to pull it off. With a large market share and huge media budget, Red Bull makes it difficult for new brands to compete. Unless a brand is willing to spend a large amount of cash on R&D, media expenditures and competitively price its product to give incentive for consumers to switch from Monster or one of the other brands, it would not gain enough of the market share to compete. Red Bull is in a league of its own so new entries would mostly be competing with Monster, Full-Throttle, Tab, Rockstar, and numerous other less popular brands. DPSG on the other hand has the brand loyalty, equity, image, and budget to support such a venture. It also has some unique qualities such as the addition of protein, a larger, re-sealable bottle, and an emphasis on performance over simply something to perk the consumer up. Since DPSG already has a target market,  distribution network, and manufacturing set up, it could feasibly enter the market on the shoulders of its good name. The fact that DPSG has differentiated itself from the other brands also gives them a leg up. If it could successfully attract more consumers from the 35-54 year old range by riding its healthy image and promoting a healthier, more fulfilling energy beverage, it could that target market and become a great competitor. _3. WHAT TARGET CONSUMER MARKET SHOULD BE CHOSEN FOR A NEW ENERGY BEVERAGE BRAND?_ An opportunity lies in the 35-54 year old range. It is a market that does not receive much attention and is not specifically targeted. Since this target market consumes only slightly less than the 24 and under market, there is a great opportunity to promote a product that suits their needs and advertisements that speak to them. By capturing that market, DPSG will stay consistent with its brand image and give it the awareness and experience to begin transitioning into the 12-34 year old market in the future. After 35, many men and women begin to exercise harder, and more often to maintain their youth as much as they can. If DPSG can provide a happy medium between a sugary energy drink and a full-fledged protein shake, they could help the 35+ consumers feel younger, while still giving them beneficial ingredients that their bodies need. _4. WHAT PRODUCT SHOULD BE INTRODUCED AND HOW SHOULD IT BE POSITIONED/DIFFERENTIATED?_ Considering DPSG’s brand image, I think its best bet would be to introduce a low carb, low sugar, protein infused energy tea. Since the earliest civilizations, teas have been used for their various health benefits and today is no different. If they target the 35-54 market, a tea would be much more attractive than a sugary, carbonated beverage. Since Snapple has such a good name in today’s marketplace, especially with adults, I believe the drink should be branded under the Snapple name. As of right now, Snapple’s most popular flavors out of all its products are Lemon Tea and Peach Tea. DPSG could parlay that popularity into an energy tea by adding a few  ingredients. In order to position itself in a more grown up market, differentiate itself from the competition, and stay true to its loyal customers, DPSG should introduce the energy tea an aluminum bottle with the same dimensions as its 16 oz. glass bottles. This allows it to be resealed and gives it a different look than the energy drink competition on the shelf. 4-packs could also be considered for supermarket shelves. The tea should keep with the healthy image by using vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other natural ingredients to provide sustainable energy and health benefits that other energy drinks just do not provide. Instead of focusing on providing a large energy burst, DPSG should focus on providing a youthful, energetic feeling, and restoring the body to full potential. _5. Convenience stores are a great place to start because of the amount of exposure they provide and their track record in the energy drink market. Supermarkets are also a must because the majority of supermarket shoppers are within the target market. Whole foods would be a great place to showcase a new product to health conscious 35-54 year old adults. Also, vending machines in fitness centers and even placing fridges in sporting goods stores could attract attention from the target market.
